Along the way there is Marylebone High Street, the winding character of Marylebone Lane and the area's elegant architecture to enjoy - with green spaces such as Paddington Street Gardens and The Regent's Park adding to the sense that you can slow the day down rather than rush through it.

Marylebone suits that kind of day particularly well because its busy High Street quickly gives way to quieter lanes, garden squares and side streets, so the walk itself feels varied without needing to cover huge distances.

With children, there is plenty for them to get involved in too. They can help solve the clues, look for the next stop and spot details the adults might otherwise walk past. Paddington Street Gardens has open lawns and a children's play area, while the southern side of The Regent's Park is close enough to make a useful extension to the day if small legs still have energy after the picnic.

There are some good pieces of local trivia to drop into the conversation as you explore. Marylebone grew from a settlement around a church known as St Mary by the Bourne, beside the old Tyburn stream; the area also once had its own Marylebone Gardens, a well-known pleasure ground. Later, nearby Harley Street became synonymous with medical specialists. It is the sort of neighbourhood where a clue-led walk can make familiar-looking London streets feel much more interesting.

If you would rather stay outdoors, continue north towards The Regent's Park for a longer stroll; families can also make for Marylebone Green Playground if the children still have energy to spare. Or simply stop for a coffee or drink and compare notes on which clue nearly caught you out.
